Gel Coat Restoration
& Color Matching

UV oxidation and surface damage are inevitable on any hull that sees Michigan seasons. We restore gloss, address the damage, and work to match your hull's aged color as closely as the material allows — honestly, without overpromising.

What We Do

The finish on your hull
is telling you something.

Chalky, oxidized gel coat isn't just cosmetic — it's the hull's surface layer breaking down from UV exposure. Left untreated, oxidation penetrates deeper, eventually compromising the structural protection gel coat provides.

We work back through the oxidation to clean, sound substrate, apply the correct gel coat, and bring the surface back to gloss. Every job is assessed individually — the approach depends on how deep the damage has gone.

Color matching on aged hulls is a skill, not a formula. We take it seriously and we're good at it. But we're also honest about what's possible — and that's in your contract.

What We Address
UV Oxidation & Chalking Surface oxidation ranging from light haze to severe chalking. The extent determines the approach — compound only, or full surface preparation and re-coat.
Color Fading & Discoloration Uneven fading, staining, and color drift from years of sun exposure. We match to the hull as it is today, not the factory spec from twenty years ago.
Surface Pitting & Porosity Micro-pitting and porosity that catch water and dirt. Addressed during surface prep before any color work begins.
Localized Repairs Requiring Color Match After any structural or cosmetic repair, the finished area needs to match the surrounding hull. Color matching is built into every repair we do.
The Process

How gel coat restoration actually works.

01

Assessment & Depth Evaluation

We evaluate the oxidation stage, surface integrity, and the extent of color drift before quoting. What looks like a simple compound job sometimes reveals deeper damage. We'd rather find it now than discover it mid-repair.

02

Surface Preparation

Washing, decontamination, and sanding back to sound substrate. The quality of this step determines everything that comes after. No shortcuts here — this is where most amateur repairs fail.

03

Color Matching

We mix gel coat to match your hull's current, aged color — not the original factory specification. Aged gel coat is a moving target: UV, salt, heat, and years of weathering all shift the color in ways that factory codes can't account for. We work from the hull itself, mixing and testing in natural light until we're as close as the material allows.

04

Application & Cure

Gel coat application to the prepared surface. Cure time varies by temperature and humidity — Michigan weather is a variable we account for, particularly with mobile work.

05

Compound, Polish & Protect

Once cured, the repaired area is compounded and polished to gloss. We blend the transition zone between repaired and original surface. A hull buff out of the surrounding area can be added at this stage — see Hull Buff Out for details.

On Color Matching: Honest Expectations

Gel coat color match is performed to the best of our ability. Exact factory color match cannot be guaranteed on aged hulls. This language is in every contract we issue — because it's true, and because any shop that promises otherwise is setting you up for disappointment.

Gel coat changes color as it weathers. UV exposure, heat, oxidation, and years on the water all shift the surface away from the original factory specification. We mix and test in natural light, working from the hull itself rather than a color code. In most cases the result is excellent and the repair blends well. Occasionally, particularly on older or heavily faded hulls, a variation remains visible under certain light conditions. We'll tell you what to expect before we start — not after.

90-Day Workmanship Warranty

All workmanship is warranted for 90 days from service completion. If a defect in our work is identified within this period, we return to correct it at no additional charge. This covers workmanship only — not impact damage, improper use, or conditions outside our control.

Common Questions

What we hear most about gel coat.

Our goal is always to minimize the visual impact of every repair. On most jobs the result blends well and holds up to close inspection. On older or heavily faded hulls, a variation may remain visible under certain light conditions — usually raking sunlight at a low angle. We'll give you an honest assessment of what's realistic for your specific hull before any work begins.
Yes. We mix from the hull itself rather than relying on factory color codes. An original code is a starting point, not a match — because the hull hasn't been that color since it left the factory. We mix and test samples in natural light against your actual hull until we're as close as the material allows.
Run your hand across the surface and look at what comes off. If your palm is white or chalky, you have oxidation — not just a dirty hull. Light oxidation can often be addressed with compounding. Moderate to heavy oxidation requires surface preparation and re-coating to get lasting results. Text us a photo and we'll tell you what we're looking at.
It depends on the extent of oxidation and your goals. Restoring only a damaged section will create a visible difference between the repaired and surrounding areas — especially if the rest of the hull is heavily faded. If color consistency matters to you, a full hull restoration is worth the investment. We'll show you what the difference will look like before you decide.
That depends on how the boat is stored, how often it's used, and what UV protection is applied afterward. A properly restored hull that's regularly waxed and stored covered can hold its finish for several seasons. Michigan winters are harder on gel coat than many climates — we can advise on maintenance after the work is done.
